Back in July 2012 I took my 81 year old Dad to the USA. He was pretty fit and agile, but I did notice he was struggling with a few things; stairs being the main issue. I left him in Washington with my brother and went to New York to meet up with a friend from home. She was travelling with some of her friends and one of them had a mobility issue and required either a frame or wheelchair to get around.
Wow – what an eye opener that was for me. I’ve had to use crutches a few times in my life which was difficult enough – but this was a whole new ball game. Many places catered to Karen’s needs, but many more didn’t. Getting a cab that was accessible wasn’t an easy task and maneuvering on and off the busses was stressful to say the least. The subway wasn’t even an option! She had booked her accommodation on line and had found a place that claimed to be ‘accessible’. Well, it turned out it was accessible to Times Square and other popular tourist attractions, but you had to navigate three flights of stairs to get to the room!
Jump forward to January 2013 and we all get together again at my place in Northern NSW. Reminiscing about our adventures in New York and hearing more horror stories of Karen and Libby’s travels together and Libby says “You know what would be a really good thing – a website that caters specifically to people with disabilities who want to go travelling.”
And so the seed was planted and Can Go Everywhere has begun to grow. It’s still very much in its infancy, mainly concentrating on Northern NSW – but with your help we’ll have it up and running on a national and international scale before you know it. We’ll also be developing an app so you can have us with you wherever you go.
To do this we need your help. Become a Member of the CanGo family and tell us about the places you’ve been and the things you’ve done. Support the website by using it to search out accommodation for your next holiday and give us reviews and feedback on your experiences. We provide this service to you for free, but we do charge the businesses listed here a small fee. So for them to keep supporting us, we need you to support them. Click through to their website from ours so they’ll know you’ve found them here at cangoeverywhere.com.
You can also like us on Facebook and if you’re a Tweeter follow us there as well.
Happy travels!
